 About the Hammonds

Jacky & Mike Hammond are SIM (Serving in Mission) missionaries working as the Program/ Project Co-ordinators for the SIM “Hope for AIDS” program in Malawi, Southern Africa.  Jacky & Mike have two sons Joshua and Christopher.   The family has lived and served in Malawi for 6(?) years.

Jacky & Mike believe that whilst humanly speaking HIV/AIDS is the most devastating disaster to have hit Africa (and beyond), it presents a great opportunity for the church. The challenge is to proclaim, and demonstrate in word and deed, the love of God in Christ. The Hammonds believe we have a message of good news that no government can offer.  This is the hope that God offers with the assurance of His love and His invitation of eternal life to those who will receive Him.

HOPE for AIDS’ program covers:

H is for home based care. Volunteers from the church are trained to visit sufferers and their families, providing emotional, spiritual and practical support.

O is for orphan care. AIDS is wiping out a whole generation in the prime of their lives leaving a huge orphan problem. The HOPE for AIDS program aims to support the extended families in order to maintain the orphans within the community.

P is for prevention. If we are to stop AIDS we must work to prevent it. The church has a vital role to play in this respect.

E is for empowering the church. The church in Africa is often described as being ‘a mile wide and an inch deep’ so a vital part of the program is the discipling of the church so that it can truly be a ‘light in the darkness’ drawing people to know Jesus.

A Note from the Hammonds

”We only go as part of a team so we would invite you to be part of this compassionate ministry – to make a real difference to real people in Malawi through your prayers, financial gifts and staying in touch”.

Prayer Points

Dear all

I think it is some time since we sent a prayer request out in between Malawi Matters, but since it looks like the next MM won’t be ready until August we thought we should send this brief update.

Give thanks for:-

-          The team from St John’s Beecroft in Sydney arriving on Wednesday to run programs (youth, kids, help on a small building project, HBC visiting) in one of the villages with a Home Based Care program (Sani), followed by leading the kids’ program at our annual missionary retreat, Spiritual Life Conference (SLC).

-          Sufficient fuel to make the journey, but pray we have sufficient to also return without additional delays

-          the boys achieving great results at school, and for the holidays just commenced

-          A few days away prior to Spiritual Life Conference, and for the SLC itself

And please pray for:-

-          The team from Beecroft, for health and safety while travelling, for luggage to arrive on time with the team (ie not delayed), and especially for enough fuel to be found en route for all the travelling that needs to be done – we are in the midst of an ongoing fuel shortage, both diesel and petrol

-          Kondwani, our AIDS prevention worker, recovering from a mild bout of pneumonia, and as he prepares for the next Peer Educator training 4-14 August, and also for his mum who has been sick on and off for a number of months

-          Thomas, our Home Based Care co-ordinator, who was not able to graduate for his Diploma in Theology on time as he still as he a number of outstanding requirements to be fulfilled – this was really disappointing for him after putting in so much effort over the last 3 years on top of his full time work load – pray that he will get the outstanding items finished so that he can finish before the end of the year, and then finally graduate

-          Gerald, our orphan care co-ordinator as he juggles work and home life balance, especially while his wife is sitting exams this week

-          Liz Piper, returning to the UK today after 2 years here in Malawi, pray that everything comes together well for her to transfer to a long term role here in Malawi, and that she will find a good transition job while in the UK

-          Josh & Chris over the long holiday break – esp. that Josh will do the extra school work that has been assigned, and that they will make good use of the time, while still having lots of fun – they are very much looking forward to SLC

-          Fuel shortage issues in the country to be resolved

Thanks for praying

Jacky & Mike
